With some serious world-beating hotels when it comes to sustainability as well as its mission to preserve the planet, Costa Rica entices visitors with jungle-fringed beaches, adrenaline-fuelled activities and a huge diversity of wildlife from sloths to monkeys and the rare resplendent quetzal. Navigate white-water rapids, zipline through the jungle canopy and trek volcano trails before hitting one of the many beaches. And when it comes to beaches you’ll be spoiled for choice between Pacific surf or golden Caribbean sands, laidback luxury ecolodges or boutique resorts. Costa Rica is a great option for families, honeymooners, solo travellers and first-timers to Latin America.

Poas Volcano Crater & La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Daily Summary

Poas Volcano & La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Pickup: 07:00am. Rise early this morning and marvel at the active Poas Volcano today from the viewing point. The volcano reaches 2,780m and has become decidedly more active in the last 50 years. The visit to the crater is limited to around 25 minutes to ensure just a small volume of visitors at a time. Soak up the views across the valley and into the volcano lake itself.
Important: according to the new regulations of the park, you are required to carry an identification/passport document to enter. The volcano has constant activity so the visit is subject to restrictions.

From Poas, stop for a refreshing juice at one of the strawberry plantation cafes then continue to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a private 70 acre reserve. La Paz features five waterfalls, safe hiking trails and animal exhibits among other interesting attractions. The property allows you to wander through 2 miles of paved trails passing stunning waterfalls. The Hummingbird Garden attracts 26 different species and at the Butterfly Garden and on site laboratory, you will have the opportunity to observe the most colourful species while learning about the lifecycle and metamorphosis of these beautiful creatures. The Serpentarium exhibits 30 of the country's snake species. In the Ranarium, frogs roam freely throughout a landscaped enclosure. La Casita de la Paz is a farmhouse reproduction that gives a cultural insight into the lives of rural Costa Ricans. The park has also a refuge for wild birds and felines. These animals came from a centre that lost funding and had to close, so they were placed under the care of La Paz Waterfall Gardens. These specimens were injured or had been exposed to humans for too long to be released back into the wild.

What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes (preferably with a thick tread for hiking the trails and steps), shorts or lightweight trousers and a lightweight jacket or raincoat.
Important note: The Park ranges in altitude from 5,200 feet to 4,200 feet so it can get chilly when the clouds roll in. (This service is on a private basis.)

There are very few areas left in the world with such immense natural beauty and little development. Separated from each other by rolling green hills, the pristine beaches and peaceful bays are perfect for some relaxation away from the crowds, whilst inland you can discover forests full of diverse wildlife. World-class waves attract a steady stream of surfers, and the area is also great for horseback riding, hiking, fishing, birdwatching and marine turtle observation.

Introducing Belize

Famed for its dazzling cobalt and turquoise coastline and its impressive barrier reef, Belize is a paradise for divers and snorkellers. Multi-coloured fish and vibrant corals are abundant and make this a wonderful ecosystem to explore, while the powdery, white sand beaches await for downtime, with lush shady palms and fresh coconuts galore on its many cayes and islands. Charming visitors with its relaxed Caribbean vibes and rich blend of cultures, this small English-speaking country has so much more to offer than its ocean delights. Mainland Belize is covered by dense rainforest, which hides some fascinating Mayan archaeological sites and a vast cave network, as well as being home to plentiful wildlife, from the elusive jaguar to numerous not-so-shy monkey species.

Cayo District

Rugged and remote, the Cayo District is a vast stretch of highland rainforests, cattle ranches, and pinelands. Located in western Belize and bordering Guatemala's El Petén region, explore the great outdoors on foot, by horse, or via kayak, raft, or canoe. Belize's oldest and largest national park - Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve - offers caves to explore, cool rivers for swimming, and a seemingly endless forest that is home to myriad tropical birds. The real hub of the district is San Ignacio, a small town featuring rustic, colonial-era streets, an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops and a lively weekly market.

Should you wish to dine out whilst staying at Chaa Creek, a couple of recommendations are as follows:
- Guava Limb Cafe - for an early dinner. It's owned by Chaa Creek and uses all their organic veggies grown at the farm. The menu is different from Chaa Creek and there are some lovely international dishes and daily specials such as the shrimp summer rolls with their guava sauce. Drinks and desserts are excellent too. Chaa Creek will be able to offer reservation and transfer services too.
- Crave House of Flavours - Chef Alejandro has placed the emphasis on theatre with spectacular food presentation served from his open kitchen, for a truly interactive dining experience. The short menu changes every day based on produce available, the season and Alejandro’s whims and ideas described as a marriage of international and Maya Mestizo cuisine. Make sure to look out for the theme nights that pop up once in a while.

Fishing, kayaking, sailboating, kite surfing, scuba diving, and snorkelling are the main activities here, and you can spot sting rays, nurse sharks, and manatees in the water.

In Caye Caulker, some of the local eateries that we recommend are as follows (subject to change):
- Pasta Per Caso - Anna and Armando make devine pasta from scratch every morning, plus fresh breads. There are only 2 pasta choices, a cheese plate, a house salad and a USDA steak and Italian wines. If you enjoy fresh pasta then you should definitely book.
