Introducing Belize
Famed for its dazzling cobalt and turquoise coastline and its impressive barrier reef, Belize is a paradise for divers and snorkellers. Multi-coloured fish and vibrant corals are abundant and make this a wonderful ecosystem to explore, while the powdery, white sand beaches await for downtime, with lush shady palms and fresh coconuts galore on its many cayes and islands. Charming visitors with its relaxed Caribbean vibes and rich blend of cultures, this small English-speaking country has so much more to offer than its ocean delights. Mainland Belize is covered by dense rainforest, which hides some fascinating Mayan archaeological sites and a vast cave network, as well as being home to plentiful wildlife, from the elusive jaguar to numerous not-so-shy monkey species.
Cayo District
Rugged and remote, the Cayo District is a vast stretch of highland rainforests, cattle ranches, and pinelands. Located in western Belize and bordering Guatemala's El Petén region, explore the great outdoors on foot, by horse, or via kayak, raft, or canoe. Belize's oldest and largest national park - Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve - offers caves to explore, cool rivers for swimming, and a seemingly endless forest that is home to myriad tropical birds. The real hub of the district is San Ignacio, a small town featuring rustic, colonial-era streets, an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops and a lively weekly market.
Should you wish to dine out whilst staying at Chaa Creek, a couple of recommendations are as follows:
- Guava Limb Cafe - for an early dinner. It's owned by Chaa Creek and uses all their organic veggies grown at the farm. The menu is different from Chaa Creek and there are some lovely international dishes and daily specials such as the shrimp summer rolls with their guava sauce. Drinks and desserts are excellent too. Chaa Creek will be able to offer reservation and transfer services too.
- Crave House of Flavours - Chef Alejandro has placed the emphasis on theatre with spectacular food presentation served from his open kitchen, for a truly interactive dining experience. The short menu changes every day based on produce available, the season and Alejandro’s whims and ideas described as a marriage of international and Maya Mestizo cuisine. Make sure to look out for the theme nights that pop up once in a while.
