Daily Summary
  • Excursion: Introduction to Buenos Aires' Northern Neighbourhoods
  • Accommodation: Nuss Buenos Aires Soho

Introduction to Buenos Aires' Northern Neighbourhoods

Our journey begins in Buenos Aires, “the Paris of South America”. From the lush Plaza San Martin, we head north to the posh Recoleta District. Stroll along Avenida Alvear, the most palatial street in Buenos Aires. With its elegant architecture and tree lined promenades, this distinct area was once home to the porteño aristocracy who gave it buildings such as the Pereda Palace (Brazilian Embassy), the Ortiz Basualdo Palace (French Embassy), Unzué de Casares Palace (Jockey Club) and more.

A visit to Recoleta Cemetery, an amazing above-ground cemetery lined with mausoleums and statues, is a must. This is the final resting place of Eva Duarte. Known throughout the world simply as Evita, she is perhaps Argentina’s most famous figure. The neighbouring El Pilar Church is one of the city’s oldest and most beautiful churches with its wonderful woodcarvings and silver altar from Alto Perú.

The Palermo residential neighbourhood, with its quiet curvy streets, wonderful parks and rose gardens, monuments, lovely town-houses and city mansions is an oasis to the city. It holds the city’s zoo and the Botanical Gardens. Today, Palermo has developed new areas under popular names such as Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood where signature designers have their trendy boutiques offering clothes, home accessories and more. The area offers an array of dining options: think chic and gourmet!

Watch rowers pass by as wooden speedboats chug their way taking passengers or housing a floating grocery store! The islands are covered with exuberant vegetation, with an amazing variety of trees and flowers. On the mainland, explore the colourful fruit market. A stop for lunch at a local restaurant can be arranged (optional).

This charming rural hotel is just 20 minutes outside of Mendoza yet has a convenient location on the edge of Chacras de Coria village, home to a very good selection of wineries and restaurants for guests to enjoy on foot. The property has been built with its surroundings in mind; using a mix of Andean stone and typical desert wood, which together with the log fires and stylish textiles exudes a cosy warmth. Rooms are spacious, with plenty of natural light from the floor to ceiling windows. Some of the rooms have doors which open out on to a terrace or balcony.  Other facilities include the wine cellar, an outdoor heated pool, and a games room. Finca La Azul has an incredible spot on the slope of the Cordon del Plata in the mighty Andes Mountains. It started life as just a vineyard, but with the owner’s hard work and determination, today it functions as a successful boutique winery. The six chicly designed rooms make the most of the extensive views across the vineyards and Andes, with terraces on the ground floor and balconies on the upper floor. Some rooms come with log-burners, which give them a cosy, intimate feel. Guests will be made to feel like part of the family here, with warm hospitality and personalised attention assured from the owners. There is a lovely outdoor garden and swimming pool for guests to relax by after a day of winery visits and tastings. This region produces some of Argentina’s finest wine.

The Gran Melia Iguazu (formerly the Sheraton Iguazu) has an unrivalled location, with it being the only hotel within the Iguazu National Park. The hotel boasts spectacular views of the Iguazu Falls, and when the Park opens, guests have the privilege of wandering the trails before the main crowds arrive. Although a large hotel, the contemporary rooms are spacious and well appointed, and the higher room categories boast incredible views of the Falls. The main communal areas, such as the oversized infinity pool, the rooftop bar, and the restaurants all maximise the views of the Falls too. Guests can indulge in international and Argentine specialities at the Merkado Restaurant, or Mediterranean cuisine and Spanish tapas at Amaro, accompanied by live music. After a day of exploring the trails, the Yasi Spa awaits you for some well-deserved pampering.
