From Andean culture and sweeping desert landscapes in the north to rugged granite peaks and gauchos (cowboys) in the south, Argentina is a vast country of contrasts. Throw its glaciers, vineyards, wetlands and waterfalls into the mix and it’s hard to know where to start. Every inch of Argentina has something to captivate visitors and even Buenos Aires, its vibrant capital, has so much to offer, with lively pavement cafes, infamous nightlife, sultry tango and of course, world-class steak. Enjoy fine dining, incredible wines and jaw-dropping natural wonders, from the Perito Moreno glacier to the mighty Iguazu falls. With so much to offer, Argentina is bound to leave you wanting more.

Stretching from the arid Atacama Desert in the north, through turquoise fjords in the Lake District and Patagonian wilderness right down to the Tierra del Fuego archipelago on the southern tip, the dramatic landscapes will stir your soul. En route, you’ll see snow-capped volcanoes, dense pine forest, glacial lakes, erupting thermal geysers, otherworldly salt flats and lenga rainforest, all pristine. Cities are cosmopolitan. Santiago sits in a bowl cradled by the spectacular Andes, while colourful Valparaiso has an easy, boho vibe. The desert oasis village of San Pedro de Atacama is a jumping-off point for the cactus-strewn eponymous desert, with its mystical landscapes and magnificent star gazing. Pretty Pucon, home to the Machupe people, is a base for watersports: white-water rafting and kayaking across mirror-still lakes. But the biggest lure in our eyes is Patagonia, a vast wilderness of mammoth glaciers and rugged mountains, the most extraordinary terrain you’ll ever see.

Get under the skin of Bolivia and you are sure to be charmed by its rich indigenous culture and sweeping altiplanic landscapes. This landlocked country may be smaller than most of its neighbours but it’s bound to take your breath away (and not just because of the altitude). From north to south and east to west, Bolivia delights with an array of landscapes, from the Amazon rainforest and the shores of Lake Titicaca to the vast Uyuni Salt Flats and altiplanic deserts that make up the south. As you explore its highlights and other far-from-the-tourist-trail sites, we challenge you not to fall in love with Bolivia.

Colombia is one of South America’s most exciting and diverse countries. From the snow-capped Andes and high-altitude paramos, past the emerald Zona Cafetera and Los Llanos grasslands, down to palm-fringed beaches of the Caribbean and Pacific Coast, no two areas are the same. This huge range of altitudes makes it the second most biodiverse country in the world (after Brazil), with an almost-unbelievable range of birds, mammals and amphibians, many of them endemic. Come to see cotton-top tamarins, critically endangered Orinoco crocodiles and giant anteaters. Culture wise, the country packs a punch too, with cobbled colonial towns, indigenous communities and vibrant, sprawling cities. There are ancient cities enshrouded in jungle, too. It’s a country with everything: a place for adventurers and explorers, history buffs and wildlife lovers. And the tropical offshore islands give you your fix of relaxation.

The cosmopolitan capital and largest city in Argentina, Buenos Aires combines the laid-back ambience of a European capital with the fiery passion of a Latin-American barrio, a combination that makes it an enticing destination. The city has a lively night scene, with a great selection of bars and jazz and tango clubs, often with tango dancing spilling out on to the streets. This is a city that never sleeps! Those in search of fueling the tastebuds will not be disappointed, with succulent steaks found on almost every street corner; washed down with a generous glass of Malbec. Buenos Aires, or ‘BA’ as it’s referred to, is renowned for its conserved European architecture from beautiful French and Italian style palaces to traditional neighbourhoods enhanced by colourful murals; the city has a vibrant street-art scene. Be sure to leave some space in the suitcase, as there’s plenty of shopping malls and markets for buying local arts and crafts. For sweet-toothed travellers, a jar of dulce de leche or some chocolate alfajores are a must.

Daily Summary

Full Day Visit to Colonia de Sacramento

Pickup from hotel this morning.

Private transfer around 15 mins from your hotel to the Buquebus dock to board the ferry to Colonia.

Only a short hop across the Rio de la Plata (a one-hour ferry boat ride) takes you to Colonia del Sacramento in the neighbouring country of Uruguay. This small and charming historic riverside town offers the perfect escape from the Buenos Aires hustle and bustle. Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, the town’s architecture is reminiscent of the old quarter of Oporto or Lisbon. It can easily be visited on foot, and the best place to start is at the Puerta de la Ciudadela, the gate to the old fort which lies beyond a wooden bridge over a dry moat.

Further interesting historical sites include the Calle de los Suspiros (street of sighs), a beautiful little cobblestone street lined with colourful houses and Colonia’s trademark yellow lamps. Many ancient colonial houses are open to the public, such as Casa Nacarello, now a museum as well as the Casa del Virrey. There are many museums to choose from, housed in the cool splendour of restored mansions, such as the Portuguese Museum, the Tile Museum and the Indigenous Museum. Other points worth visiting are the church, which has withstood successive onslaughts from warring armies through the ages and is a rich repository of this country’s chequered history, about which more information can be found at the Regional Archives.

Colonia was recently made a UNESCO heritage site, so it should remain a time capsule of the Rio de la Plata’s colonial past.

Board the return ferry to Buenos Aires. Private transfer to your hotel.

Note - This excursion includes a private English speaking guide in Colonia. Lunch is included at a local restaurant with a soft drink and a glass of wine included.

San Pedro de Atacama, a historic desert village with a continuous habitation spanning 10,000 years, was prized by ancient empires for its mineral wealth and strategic position along caravan trade routes. Situated at the northern edge of the vast Salar de Atacama, a salt lake desert teeming with birdlife and unique landscapes, the village now serves as a bustling tourist destination in northern Chile. Despite its touristy charm, it maintains a laid-back atmosphere with traditional adobe buildings. While the village itself offers modest attractions, including a 17th-century church and a well-organised museum, it serves as an excellent base for exploring the region's natural wonders. San Pedro boasts an array of restaurants and bars, catering to travellers who relish a respite after desert adventures. Authorities have deliberately discouraged a party culture, allowing visitors to appreciate the area's exceptional stargazing and serene desert ambiance. The town is strategically located near archaeological sites, salt flats, Valle de la Luna, Lagunas Altiplanicas, and the El Tatio Geysers. Outdoor enthusiasts can engage in activities like mountain climbing and sandboarding, while those seeking relaxation can indulge in the nearby hot springs of Puritama.

Pickup from hotel late afternoon.

Enjoy a private excursion to Moon Valley – a completely arid landscape, which comes alive with its impressive shapes formed by the wind.

Begin your guided excursion with a walk through the Cordillera de la Sal, where you can observe a spectacular geological phenomenon. Composed of large deposits of salt, gypsum and reddish clay, this mountain range offers a landscape rich in natural sculptures. In it, you can find magnificent caves with stalactites, sharp ridges, a landscape of singular morphology and an impressive view of the Salar and the volcanoes of the region.

The Valley of the Moon, located in the middle of the Cordillera de la Sal, is an area of sculptural rock formations whose salinity emerges to the surface, covering the landscape with a whitish and dry mantle that gives the place an aspect similar to the lunar surface. Between dunes and extensions of crystallised gypsum stones, small hills and sharp ridges appear, in which erosion has created particular figures that, thanks to the effects of light, take on different aspects.

Continue to the Kari viewpoint, where you can enjoy the majestic view of the region's volcanoes, and the beauty and magic of the town of San Pedro.

This morning, you’ll be transferred north towards the Catarpe Valley, a place full of history and traditions. Within the valley we will be witnesses of the imposing Quebrada del Diablo, a narrow canyon easily accessible and decorated by the flow of the San Pedro River. This water flow is the key for the growth of green vegetation in contrast to the arid landscape so typical of the desert. During our adventure we will have to cross the river several times before noticing the Pukará de Quitor on the opposite slope of the terrain. Occasionally, we will need to get off our bikes in order to pass some very narrow sections along the serpentine maze of trails of the Garganta del Diablo while surrounded by impressive and majestic rock formations of various textures. Afterwards, return to your hotel.

Includes: Equipment, entrance fee, water and snack.

Please note the specific activity is confirmed the day before the outing (by the supplier) since the hosts develop these activities as part of their daily life and they are not always available. This guarantees the authenticity of the experience and it helps us understand how the life of the locals has been and still is being molded by Andean cosmovision and the “Pachamama” (Mother Earth). You will also walk the streets of San Pedro to get to know the history, traditions and challenges of living in a village in the driest desert of the planet.

A sample of a day at Mashaquipe is as follows:

The River Yacuma is one of the best places in the Amazon region for wildlife; its unique characteristics and the commitment of its local people have enabled it to be declared a protected area (600,000 ha). There are surprises at every turn on the River Yacuma: a pink dolphin surfaces with a snort on one curve, after another a troop of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviesis) play on the overhanging branches; further on black caimans and alligators bask in the sun peacefully sharing the shore with families of capibaras. In the trees above, flocks of birds watch over the arrival of visitors whose only purpose is to watch the latest show that nature is putting on at that very moment.

The River Yacuma is part of the Mamoré-Madeira basin and its location in what is known as the temporary floodplains of Moxos, in the department of Beni, helps regulate the water flowing in from the Amazon. This region is famous for its wildlife gathering on the banks of the river and on the few forested islands along the way. Fish for piranhas, watch the wildlife, spot two endemic species of monkeys and the blue-throated macaw, track down an anaconda on the grassland pampas, and visit the forest islands to watch the birds. At dusk you can stop at a wide pool formed by the river to watch one of the protected area’s most distinguished inhabitants, the playful pink river dolphin.

Hike to the Colonial Village of Guane
Hike to the Colonial Village of Guane
Hike to the Colonial Village of Guane
Daily Summary

Camino Real Trail

Pickup from hotel this morning.

The historic Camino Real trail from Barichara down to the quaint village of Guane was originally established by the region's indigenous communities. It forms part of a much wider network of trails that provided vital trade routes between the various Guane indigenous settlements of the region. With the subsequent arrival of the Spanish, they also used these trails to move supplies and soldiers. After falling into disrepair, the trail was restored by the German architect and then local resident George von Lenguerke in around 1864. The trek begins at the outskirts of the northern edge of the village, overlooking the spectacular valley and mountains out to the west.

The total distance walked is approximately 5.5km, and takes at a leisurely pace up to 3 hours to descend to Guane. Mostly cobbled, the trail begins with a tough steep incline of steps descending some 400m. From there, the incline levels off and the trail meanders down through the local countryside. Ending in the tiny colonial village of Guane, the trail passes through areas of native woodland, open pasture and small rural homesteads mostly dedicated to simple agriculture. On route, the trail opens up at certain points to reward walkers with the most spectacular Andean Mountain scenery. There will also be opportunities to spot a plethora of local bird life including Toucans and various species of hummingbird.

Guane is a smaller and older version of Barichara, and if possible, even more sleepy and laid back. In the quaint little main square, there is a small local Archaeological and Paleontological Museum, which if open is worth a quick look. From there the idea will be to rest a while in one of the local coffee shops before heading back up to Barichara by road in a taxi or local tuk-tuk-style vehicle.

Important notes: Comfortable footwear is recommended plus lightweight long-sleeved top and trousers. The sun can be very strong, rain also possible and shelter is limited. The trail is well-marked but can be steep with loose ground. It's mostly downhill but the trek requires a reasonable degree of fitness. Toilet stops on the trail are basic.

Spend the afternoon independently exploring the highlights of Barichara’s well preserved centre on foot. Visit its most important churches and most impressive monuments. Watch artisans at work and shop for souvenirs.
