Thailand, Laos and Indonesia

Thailand, Laos and Indonesia

Affectionately dubbed ‘the land of smiles’, Thailand is the most popular country to visit in South East Asia. As a result, a lot of it is touristy, but it’s still possible to go off the beaten track, and find a wealth of incredible experiences and sights.

Every twist and turn offers postcard panoramas: pristine white-sand beaches lapped by turquoise waters, emerald jungle, steamy rice paddies, soaring mountains and green seas punctuated by limestone karsts. The capital – frenetic Bangkok – is a bit of a Marmite destination (we love it), all labyrinthine markets and gleaming golden temples. The nightlife is incredible, the street food sublime. Up north, Chang Mai is a calmer, authentic town, with colourful Buddhist shrines and night markets. Nearby Chang Rai is the jumping off point for hilltribe treks and river rafting. Come to visit ruined ancient cities and bask on tropical palm-lined beaches. No matter how mainstream, it’s a fabulous place.

The landlocked country of Laos has a rich cultural heritage and a history influenced by neighboring nations. Laos is characterised by its mountainous landscapes, lush forests, and the Mekong River that flows through the heart of the country. Vientiane, the capital and largest city, reflects a blend of French colonial architecture and traditional Buddhist temples. Laos is predominantly rural, with a predominantly agrarian economy. The country has a diverse ethnic makeup, and Theravada Buddhism plays a central role in its culture. Despite being one of the least developed nations in the region, Laos offers unique travel experiences with its serene natural beauty and warm hospitality.

As a kaleidoscope of cultures, languages and landscapes spanning 17,000 islands, it’s hard to pinpoint what makes Indonesia special but beautiful surf beaches, world-class dive spots, wildlife rich rainforest and active volcanoes make up a chunk of its highlights.

Java is the beating heart, where people and cultures define every experience, from adventures across the patchwork of rice paddies to the capital city, Jakarta, and the impressive temple of Borobudur. Perhaps better known are the islands of Bali and Lombok, famed for their beaches, while the white sands and coral reefs of the Gili Islands attract snorkellers and divers in abundance.

Indonesia also offers unforgettable wildlife encounters - watch orangutans and macaques along the banks of the rivers and lumbering komodo dragons emerging from the trees. Whether exploring one island or ten, you’re bound to have a reason to return.

Day at Leisure in Luang Prabang
Daily Summary
  • Excursion: Day at Leisure in Luang Prabang
  • Accommodation: Amantaka
  • Meals: B, L

Day at Leisure in Luang Prabang

Relax at your hotel and enjoy the swimming pool, or live like a local - find your favourite café haunt and soak up life on the Mekong.

Some suggestions:
Visit MandaLao Elephant Conservation: Transfer this afternoon to a beautiful elephant sanctuary just outside Luang Prabang. Meet with one of the directors who will fill you in on more detail with some fascinating stories about the elephants and their refuge. Learn the challenges they’ve faced and how they are learning to improve the situation one elephant at a time. After being regaled you will cross the river by boat where you will be met by 2 adult Asian elephants. Your guide and the mahouts will help you feed and later bath these majestic creatures in the river. Next, follow the elephants on a 1-hour trek through rice paddies and meandering creeks during which you will witness the unique bond between the mahouts and their elephants while the guide explains more about the incredible history that Laos has with the elephant. After saying goodbye to your pachyderm friends, you’ll head back to camp for the transfer to the restaurant.

Rural Village Visit: Meet with a young entrepreneur who has climbed the social ladder from a young, rural village boy, to a successful entrepreneur running his own social enterprise in Luang Prabang. First visit Big Bother Mouse, a locally run project committed to changing this by publishing books that help to make it fun and easy to learn to read. They rely on visitors to help them distribute them. Few books are available in Laos and they rarely reach the rural villages such as the one you will visit today. Ken will then take you to his hometown, Ban Padaeng village, about 1.5 hour drive from Luang Prabang and well off the tourist trail. After a brief stop at Ken’s family house, continue to the nearby village of Ban Thapho, where you visit Ken’s old primary school, which is constructed from Bamboo. Here, you have an opportunity to meet some of the teachers and learn about the school life at such a rural destination. Afterwards, there is some time to stroll around the village and the nearby river before you will share a locally prepared lunch with the small team of teachers. With the help of Ken, the teachers will give you a further introduction of the school and answer any questions you may have. Following lunch, you will participate in a baci, a traditional ceremony, led by a village-elder, which involves gently tying cotton cords around your wrists, symbolizing friendship, good health and a good luck on your journey ahead.

Saa Paper Making: Cross the old bridge and walk to the Porsaa Learning centre for a half day Saa Papermaking workshop. Traditional saa paper is made from the mulberry bark cut and pounded into small pieces. After being soaked in water, they are boiled and then soaked in alkaline, then rinsed and beaten with a wooden mallet. The fibrous pulp is put into water then stirred and sieved at the bottom of which a piece of silk is stretched. The Saa paper pulp will be sun dried to the sieve material before being processed into traditional saa paper. Saa paper feels rough and dry, but porous and light, it has a fibrous texture that overlap in the form of a spider's web.

It is famous for some of the world’s most beautiful, biodiverse rainforests, and is home to the iconic and endangered orangutan. Split into East, South, West and Central, the majority of Kalimantan’s 12 million inhabitants live in the regional, mainly coastal capitals. The biggest city, Banjarmasin is known for its floating markets and villages. The best way to explore this region is by boat, travelling along one of the many rivers in this region, observing wildlife in their natural habitat.

Kumai River Private Cruise

Arrival into Kalimantan. Your guide will welcome you at Pangkalan Bun Airport and transfer you to the harbour in Kumai (approximately 20 minutes) to board your private river cruise.

Each boat is a renovated traditional Klotok, or wooden river boat, measuring 18m by 3m, with a comfortable upper deck where you can view the rainforest as it passes by. The boats have 3 air conditioned ensuite cabins below deck. Your cabin is fully equipped with sheets, towels and toiletries. Asian fusion meals are served around the dining table on deck. The boat crew includes the boatman, a cook, assistant cook, and English speaking guide.

If flight timings permit and all goes smoothly, you may have time to visit Tanjung Harapan, a rehabilitation centre for orangutans. After a short walk in the forest to the platforms, witness the last feeding time at 16.30.

After, you'll slowly explore the quiet river to observe the proboscis monkeys and possibly fireflies in season among the nipa palms along the riverside.

Optional night walk in the forest.

Dinner and overnight on the boat.

Important Notes:

- Please bring insect repellent, sun hats, sunscreen, and covered walking shoes. It is best to wear long sleeves and trousers in the forest (dull colours, not black, which attracts mosquitoes). As there are no towns or villages along the route, please bring all personal medications. Drinking water and reusable water bottles will be provided, but there will be no soda water or alcohol on board. Guests are welcome to bring these along. We recommend you stop off at a shop in Pangkalan Bun to purchase any alcoholic drinks you may wish to consume onboard. We have requested for the guide to allow for this, but please do feel free to remind them.

- The boat has a combined toilet/shower onboard. However, fresh water is limited, and only cold water is available.

- The boat has a small generator for lights at night or a solar system. It is possible to charge your devices whilst on the trip.

- Please bear in mind that cruise itineraries are subject to seasonal river conditions and that itineraries can change to fit with orangutan feeding times.

Dense vegetation is reflected perfectly in the tannin waters. Camp Leakey is where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rainforest. On arrival, we take an easy forest walk to see the original research station and historical display and to see feeding time at 14.00pm.
